Haven't done that in a long time...

Window Shopping 22"x30" watercolor on Arches 300 lb hp

I pulled an all nighter last night. All in the sake of art. I use to do it all the time when I was at Art Center. I also have done it many times, getting a project completed for the kids. Last night it felt like old times... I wanted to put something into the upcoming California Arts Club show, in South Pasadena. The charcoal that I started last week was just taking me so long. They look simple but to get the values smooth, it is takes some painstaking patience.

I knew on Saturday that the charcoal was just not going to be ready, so I bought some wc paper. Found my wc board, and yesterday stretched the gorgeous 300 lb paper. Couldn't believe how cheap it was at Dick Blick. I think I paid about $4.00. I double checked with the cashier, since the price on the shelf was $11.99. That was the steal of the week.

This show is based on images, and icons of a nearby town. It has some SoCA interesting landmarks, and they wanted the artists to capture that. I wanted to try something a bit different. So I took some photos around the town last week. From what I had taken, I found one that I wanted to try in wc. I did a line drawing, and transferred it to my board. I started painting about 6 or 7:00 last night. Here is the result.

EJ - Thank you.

Shirley - it is quite interesting how much information is there to use.

Ginny - Thanks my friend. I'm afraid it is on the large size for the gallery to use... we will see.

Anita - I appreciate that. Thanks so much.

This is really wonderful, you are so talanted with so many different media.

I lso meant to say that the colour of the green glass is just perfect - did you choose it or was it that colour in reality? I love how it makes the background, and the background enhances it.

Now that's worth staying up all night for.

Its like a large puzzle, fitting all the elements together and it works beautifully.

Felicity - Thank you so much... as for the glass, that was the color. I was engaged in this image due to the colors, and challenges it posed.

Jeanette - it was a bit like a puzzle. I am considering taking the image again, and using this as a color study, being a bit more free with it. Have to think on this, as I have a backlog of ideas.

Wow Robin! What a lovely and complex watercolor. I didn't even know you painted watercolors let alone that you could pull off a painting like this in one night. I hope you allowed yourself a nice, long nap the next day! :) Best of luck with the show!!

Stacy - wc was the very first wet medium that I was taught. I am glad, as others find it so daunting. It is an old friend to me. Since I have know you I have been attempting to teach myself oils which left little time for wc.

I did not find time to nap, Stacy, but I did go to bed rather early. It took its toll the next few days. I didn't pop back quite as quick as I use to.

Robin, I had commented on this and then got an error message about my post being double and now I see it didn't even come through.

I think this is a marvelous piece, Robin. You make my jaw drop everytime to try out a new medium, I don't think there is one that you don't master.

Robin
it is jaw dropping beautiful! Kudos to you for pulling an all nighter. I don't think I could do that.

Awesome

Hi Mary - yes Blogger can have glitches from time to time.

I think for me to be successful, it is far more than the medium, but rather the image that I have in my mind and striving to find results that will achieve it. Also, being able to be excited when something totally different occurs and learning from it.

Robin Neudorfer said...

Toni - perhaps you are exaggerating with the jaw dropping....

it certainly was more difficult to bounce back after the lack of sleep.

What I particularly like about this is the light reflected in the window with the outline of the trees. Not entirely sure how you do ALL this detail!

Holy smoke! This is mesmorizing. You are some sort of art genius to pull this off!

Lisa - You put a big smile on my face. I think that will be the new title on my business card. I'll quote you. haha

I really like your charcoal drawings, Robin, they are quite abstract which appeals to me. This painting is great, too!

You might want to check out the window reflection series David Burge has on his site and blog:

I have been enjoying the charcoal work Nick.

David's work is great. Thanks for sharing it. At first I thought it was digital paintings, but after looking closer I see the brush work.
I would love to see them in person.
Someone on WC shared another artist with a great window view. I guess it is a subject of interest for many.

Thanks for the encouragement.
