Golden Beets

Golden Beets 12"x16" oil on linen panel

On Thursday my youngest needed a purple cast on her wrist...figure skating injury. After I was sure all was well, I raced to my workshop. I was excited to see gorgeous beets... golden orange no less. The greens were lush and they were just calling to be painted. I jumped in to it and really lost myself in the process.

I looked into the shadows like Michael had taught me and saw gorgeous blues on the plate, so I rubbed some blue onto the panel. This instructor does not allow any type of thinner or medium, so getting the panel toned evenly wasn't that easy. I began building on top of that, and eventually pushed the lights in the front beet and on the front edge of the platter.

I completed this in 2.5 hrs and am quite pleased with the results.

I bet you are pleased, this is such a beautiful piece Robin. The light, the soft and hard edgs, the composition, the colours...WOW!

I love the colours in this Robin. But hard to tone a canvas with no thinner!

Anita - Thank you for stopping by. I am pleased with the outcome. Thank you for your nice words.

Jeanette - Yes it was difficult, but I just kept rubbing the paint around. Probably had more on the paper towel than on the linen. Thanks Jeanette.

Billie - Gosh...you put a smile on my face. Appreciated.

Robin,
You have a lot of good things happening with "Golden Beets." It is very well designed and painted, and you nicely controlled and pushed the color.

This is spectacular. I love the work you've done to depict the shadows and leaves; and those yummy colors, too. This must have felt good to work through. Thanks for sharing your work in your workshop with us, Robin.

Hope your little (not so much) one's injured wrist is healing, too.

I just love beets! Sliced thinly and fried like chips - delish! Lovely colours, Robin!

Wendee - Gosh... very kind of you. It did feel good. I love working in this manner.

Nope the first cast didn't work, too much movement. Have to go back today to replace it. If people would just slow down, we might get some where.

Anita - I will try that recipe sometime, sounds good. Thanks for stopping by. Hope you are feeling better.

Robin, this is lovely. I did an oil painting of golden beets three or so years ago, too--they have an ethereal glow about them, don't they? Wonderful work here!

Who knew beets could look dramatic!! Lovely job. I'm interested in following your class. This direct painting looks like a great idea.

These are gorgeous. I've never seen orange beets before.

Laura - They do seem like a special vegetable that has been ignored. Even the ruby variety are gorgeous, when you stop thinking of them as a root.
Thank you

Lindsay - I find it to be a wonderful addition to plein air. Making observations in the moment and not second guessing yourself. Taking away the "What should I paint" questions, is quite freeing.

Sharon - Thank you, they are fun arent't they. These leaves also were incredibly fresh. A treasure to view on the white plate.

Joyce - thanks so much for stopping by. I think that initial excitement of seeing the set up lasted through the day.

Toni - I will try some at your recommendation. It was a fun project, I think the fact that the veg was so healthy with gorgeous leaves, helped the comp quite a bit.
