Arboretum

Arboretum 8"x10" oil on panel

I had a lovely day yesterday at the L.A. County Arboretum. I walked quite a bit before deciding on a view that wasn't constrained by a mass of greenery. The day was overcast, but I was intrigued by the angles this view created. I guess it has helped to have an environmental design background. I believe I can appreciate what the designer has created in a three dimensional image. Of course I still have to consider what I can capture visually.

I had fun with this view, though it shows nothing of the acres of Botanical Gardens behind me. Nor does it bring to mind the 50+ geese on the grass to my right. They ended up in the pool before I left, and it reminded me of a teen pool party. Noisy as heck.

As I should have predicted the shapes of the reflections on the water were interrupted by the great staff of the gardens turning on the fountain. The reflections were a part of what attracted me to the angular perspective, so I left it in. Creating much of it by memory.

This is beautiful Robin! You captured the feel of recently groomed grass against stone or cement walk ways and you sky makes one feel the weather on a fresh cool day. The color of the water is glorious.

Lindsay - It is a wide open space in the middle of trees, and trees, and more trees. Turn your head to the left and you see the magnificent San Gabriel Mtns. Thanks for stopping by.

Casey - Yes I think simplicity wins the prize when it come to plein air. I get lost when there is too much confusion. Thank you for your comments on the composition. It is something that I have been searching for.

Your eye always seems to find just the right play of light or scene that creates beauty. THen you capture it.

I wish I could have seen this area, but you inspire me to go explore a very old park in town and see what I can come up with.

Jeanette - how kind you are. It is so rewarding to find out that what I see, in my minds eye is pleasing to others.

I think you should go exploring your parks. I just know you have glorious views. Better run before it is layered in winter white.

thanks for stopping by.

Hello Martin - Hope all is well with you. I am just not sure the clever played a part in this. I think it is all subconscious. A feel for balance.
Wish I knew where that came from.

I bet it would please the architect too, to witness the beauty you make of the beauty he made. Your colours and composition have a beautiful classical tranquility.

Toni - it is a very restful spot. I had it all to myself... that is except for the geese.

I really like this painting and the abstract quality of the composition. I'm sure being at the botanical garden you had a plethora of views to consider painting. This is a truly unique design and works wonderfully well! Also, the tree line in the back is beautifully painted.
