Mulberry Pond

I think I slipped into the advanced class today, when I chose this view. The thought was to narrow my vision to a smaller area than I normally do. Figured I was safe with a four foot radius ...yeah right! Five hours and I think bearly scratched the surface.

What an incredible place to set up today. It is a new pond at Descanso Gardens. In the attempt to create a water ecosystem, they have created a gorgeous pond with a dozen or more different type of water plants. The koi are at least 18 inches, and there is a four foot waterfall at one end. I would guess the pond is 30 feet from end to end. The size of a large pool and is about two feet deep at the deepest. It is extremely clear, so you can see the koi easily. Two actually jumped out of the water. I believe they were after dragonflies, which were around in the afternoon in pairs. I could paint in that one spot for weeks. Everytime you turn your head there is a perfect picture. The Descanso Family would be very proud.

Robin, How amazing to see the koi jump out of the pond. Lucky for you. Your painting seemed really more vibrant than what I see on my screen. Still think the vertical leaf is a wonderful accent in this painting. Ginny

I wish I could get a handle on reproducing my work better. That alone is an art. Once I get past the "study" stage I will have them photographed. Thank you for your encouragement Ginny. It is contagious.

Hi Robin,
I have to have a look what you have done recently..I never tried to paint moving fish in a pond!
What an ambitious project..I believe this type of work is a completely different thing from landscape.
The image looks a bit like an ancient tapestry to me with a very decorative quality and a touch of bloomsbury.
After this landscape will be an easy left hand job for you I suppose.

Martin - I like your comparison to a tapestry. I am hopeful that I have learned something from this piece.

Terri - Thank you for your comments. I only attempted to copy the colors someone else put before me. Gorgeous setting.

Hi Robin,
I just popped over here after seeing your post on my blog. This is gorgeous, and yes, what a challenge to paint moving koi! I'm a lotus freak myself, so I love seeing the lotus leaves. I hope you get some good flowers from them!

Toni - Thank you Toni, I was by yours today, but was on a schedule so I didn't comment. I love your little tutorial on lettering. I use to have to do it all by hand. I actually enjoyed it.
