Winslow Homer Study

Having studied Industrial Design, I never took the time to study any work by past artists. I had the opportunity and to do a small 5"x8" study of Mending the Nets by Winslow Homer today.
I have been discussing with myself (silently I must tell you), the need to educate myself in the art of composition. This is also training that was glazed over in my commercial design education. I believe I have good basic instincts, (wasn't that a movie?), but I have decided that this will be my next area of personal artistic development. I will see if it works to keep notes here to refer back to occasionally. I hate to get hung up on the art of blogging, but it might be a great way to reference artists that are successful in the fundamentals of composition.
This is Judi's Drawing Challenge of the Week, on Wet Canvas.

I have started paying attention to composition too. I love that ball of string that you did

What are you doing to educate yourself on composition? In particular, are there any good books or other resources you'd recommend? I'm trying to do the same, myself.

Good question, Mara. Since my color class is over. I just made this decision. I will be reading anything and everything. I will also study the art and composition that truly speaks to my soul. I was told that it is all planned out in advance, however I believe that by certain gifted artists it is intuitive. What I find out I will do my best to use my blog, to keep my notes together. Come back and learn with me.
